FRP Grating Load Capacity, Tables and Span Guidance

Choose from the load, support arrangement and deflection limit together. Use the molded grating reference data below to understand the checks, then match the actual panel and project conditions before confirming a specification.

How Much Load Can FRP Grating Carry?

FRP grating load capacity depends on the panel configuration, span, supports, load distribution and required deflection limit. A thickness or a weight per square meter does not establish an allowable load. This guide focuses on molded grating reference data and explains when a different configuration needs separate evidence. FRP, fiberglass and GRP are regional names for the same broad material category here.

Start with two questions: what must the panel carry, and how will it be supported? A walkway used by people may also carry a maintenance trolley or equipment feet. Those local loads can require a different check from the distributed pedestrian load.

Prepared by Dengtai Industry for buyers specifying our grating. Follow the sequence below:

  1. Define the span and supports.
  2. Identify the load type and units.
  3. Read load, strength and deflection together.
  4. Review the two adopted reference tables.
  5. Check changes to the panel or service conditions.
  6. Understand our factory evidence and the standard.
  7. Prepare a useful project enquiry.

Define the Grating Span and Support Arrangement

Clear span is the unsupported distance between the inner faces of the supports. Support center distance includes a different part of the bearing geometry. Panel length is the overall piece dimension. Record these separately, together with the width of the bearing surface at each end.

A table headed only “span” needs its definition confirmed before it is matched to a drawing. The reference source used below labels its dimension SPAN; we retain that description rather than assume it is a clear-span measurement. Do not substitute the full panel length or a frame center distance for the table dimension.

Supported Edges, Continuity and Bearing-Bar Direction

Show which edges are supported, where panels meet, the bearing widths and any free edges. A single span between two supports and a panel continuous over several supports are different arrangements. Four supported edges must not be assumed equivalent to two, and a fixing clip is not automatically another bearing point.

For pultruded grating, the main bearing bars must run across the intended span between supports. The transverse connecting rods do not provide an interchangeable main spanning direction. Square molded grating distributes load through its intersecting grid, but that does not make all rectangular meshes, cut pieces or openings equivalent in both directions.

Our selection approach depends on whether the supports already exist. With an existing frame, establish the actual gaps and bearing before choosing a candidate panel. With a new frame, compare a suitable deeper or different structure with a shorter support spacing. The decision concerns the complete floor arrangement, including support work, rather than panel thickness alone. See the installation planning guide for the drawing details.

Identify Uniform, Point, Line and Wheel Loads

A load table applies to a stated loading pattern. The same total force spread over a whole panel and applied through a small equipment foot can produce different bending, local stress and deflection.

Load typeInformation needed for the check
Uniform loadPressure in kPa or kN/m², loaded area and whether the value includes the panel’s self weight.
Point or local contact loadForce in N or kN, contact footprint and position relative to bars, edges and supports. A practical “point” still has a contact area.
Line loadForce per length, such as kN/m, plus the loaded length, contact width, direction and position.
Wheel or moving loadIndividual wheel loads, contact areas, wheel arrangement, route and movement or impact conditions. A uniform-load row does not establish vehicle suitability.

Read the units as carefully as the load name. Some tables describe a concentrated load per unit panel width; that is not an unrestricted point-load value. Do not assume that the letter C has the same meaning in every manufacturer’s document.

For equipment, include its operating contents and the load delivered through each foot or base. Dividing total equipment weight by the entire floor area does not make the actual contact uniform. For a trolley or vehicle, do not assume an equal split between wheels without the relevant loading information. Repeated passages, braking or impact also need to be identified.

Keep Mass, Force and Pressure Separate

1 kPa equals 1 kN/m². Kilograms describe mass; newtons and kilonewtons describe force. Panel mass in kg/m² helps establish the permanent load on the support structure, not the external load the grating can carry.

For a genuinely uniform pressure, total force equals pressure multiplied by the loaded area. That relationship organizes the project demand; it does not calculate a safe grating capacity or turn a distributed-load result into a permitted equipment weight. The FRP grating weight guide explains the separate mass-per-area and panel-weight figures.

Read Strength and Deflection Together

A suitable panel must satisfy both the applicable strength or recommended-load limit and the serviceability requirements, including deflection. A panel can remain intact while bending more than the project permits. Conversely, a small deflection at one load does not prove its ultimate strength or suitability for a different contact pattern.

Use this sequence when checking a table:

  1. Match the exact structure and material configuration, including bar dimensions, spacing, reinforcement, surface and cover.
  2. Match the table’s span definition, support arrangement and loading pattern.
  3. Identify whether the values are test results, recommended loads, design values or ultimate failure loads. Read any stated safety factor with its original basis.
  4. Compare the deflection at the required load with the project’s limit.
  5. Check the remaining service conditions, openings and document requirements.

An ultimate failure value is not a normal working-load rating. Do not apply a safety factor from one manufacturer’s table to another product or use it to create an unsupported allowable load.

Apply the Project’s Deflection Limit

If a specification gives both a fraction of span and an absolute maximum, both conditions must be met. A 5 mm target used in a comparison table, for example, is not a universal FRP grating requirement. The governing project documents and applicable standards need to be identified.

When a load-and-deflection pair fails the required limit, do not lower a fixed project load just to make the row pass. Review the structure or support spacing. If the actual loading requirement is different, check that case against applicable evidence rather than assume a proportional adjustment.

For comparable supplier quotations, keep the span definition, supports, loading pattern and deflection target consistent. Two offers for “38 mm grating” may otherwise answer different structural questions.

Adopted Molded FRP Grating Load and Deflection Tables

We have adopted the following published values as reference benchmarks for two matching molded configurations in our range. They originate from Webforge’s load data; they are not Dengtai test results or a product certification. Match the actual supplied panel and project conditions before using a row.

U is the additional uniformly distributed load in kPa, excluding the grating’s self weight. D is the paired deflection in millimeters. The source states a single-span basis and a safety factor of 5. Its span dimension must be confirmed against the applicable drawing. These rows do not provide point, wheel or line-load ratings.

Structure 1: 6 × 38 mm Bars at 38 mm Pitch

The source mass is 18.6 kg/m². Its reference span is 990 mm at 4 kPa with a 5 mm deflection target. Pitch describes the distance between adjacent bar centers, not the clear opening.

Span (mm)U (kPa)D (mm)
450151.0
600152.4
750103.7
9005.03.8
12002.55.9

Structure 2: 6 × 38 mm Bars at 19 mm Pitch

The source mass is 23.1 kg/m². Its reference span is 1035 mm at 4 kPa with a 5 mm deflection target. This is the stated 6 mm bar structure; a different mini mesh or double-layer grid is not established as equivalent by its top opening alone.

Span (mm)U (kPa)D (mm)
450151.0
600152.4
750103.6
9007.54.7
12002.54.8

Read each U/D pair together. At the source span of 1200 mm, Structure 1 has a listed pair of 2.5 kPa and 5.9 mm. That pair fails a 5 mm project target. Structure 2’s listed 4.8 mm is below that target, but this alone does not approve a different panel, support arrangement or service condition.

The 990 mm and 1035 mm reference spans are tied to the stated 4 kPa/5 mm comparison. They are not breaking spans, universal maximum spans or permitted panel lengths. Do not interpolate between rows or transfer values to other thicknesses, bar widths, resins, surfaces or covered assemblies without applicable supporting data.

Source and conditions: Webforge FRP Grating Load Tables. The source’s mass figures describe untreated, unbanded grating; this mass qualification does not establish every panel condition for the load data. Temperature, load duration and other conditions not identified in the available reference need separate confirmation.

Check Panel Changes and Service Conditions

Openings, Cut Edges, Covers and Fixings

Show cutouts before selecting or fabricating the panel. Their position, size and the bars they interrupt can affect load paths, local bearing and the need for support around an opening. A narrow strip beside a cutout cannot simply inherit the intact panel’s load row.

Cut-edge sealing protects exposed material; it does not restore interrupted reinforcement. Likewise, a cover, additional grit or a heavier finish does not automatically increase capacity. A covered assembly needs data applicable to that assembly. Fixings must suit the support and intended restraint; adding clips does not, by itself, shorten the unsupported span.

Sustained Loads, Temperature and Exposure

A pump or stored load left in place creates a different service case from occasional access. Sustained loading can increase deflection over time through creep. Normal and peak temperature, peak duration and chemical contact need to be reviewed alongside the load and actual resin system.

A resin change can alter the relevant structural and environmental evidence even when the dimensions remain the same. A nominally more corrosion-resistant resin is not, by itself, a higher load rating. Use the resin selection guide and temperature and creep guidance to describe these conditions.

Do not assume a single reduction factor covers heat, long-term load, chemicals and movement. If a condition is outside the supporting data, identify the additional information, calculation or testing needed before confirming suitability.

Our Factory Test Evidence and Project Requirements

Our Existing Factory Report

Report HZTC/BG-24051102, issued on 17 May 2024 by Hebei Haozheng Testing Services Co., Ltd., records testing for Zaoqiang County Jianxing FRP Co., Ltd., our own factory. Its stated loading conditions include a 4 kN/m² equivalent uniform design load and a 600 mm test span, with the load-capacity results recorded as passing under the report’s conditions.

The report does not identify a complete panel model, thickness, mesh and resin specification. It therefore documents the tested samples; it does not establish a load table for all our 25, 30 or 38 mm panels. It also does not validate every row in the adopted reference tables above.

Read the complete factory test report. For a project submission, the report or calculation needs to be matched to the actual proposed product and loading arrangement. See quality and technical documentation for the wider document review.

What JC/T 1026-2007 Adds

JC/T 1026-2007 lists equivalent uniform design loads for its stated uses: 2 kN/m² for access platforms, 3.5 kN/m² for stair platforms and 4 kN/m² for maintenance platforms. For those platforms, the midpoint deflection limit is L/120 and no more than 9 mm. Stair treads have a separate L/200 and 6 mm limit, with the design load specified by the user department.

These are requirements for the standard’s stated uses, not our product ratings. The standard also distinguishes damage and fracture checks at increased loading. A matching product test or calculation is still needed; a design requirement does not prove a particular panel meets it.

Identify the standard and edition required by the project. JC/T 1026-2007 is a Chinese building-materials industry standard; it is not automatically the governing specification for a US or UK installation. Its identity is listed on the official standards platform.

Prepare Your FRP Grating Load and Span Enquiry

Send the information already available. A drawing with supports and load locations marked is often more useful than a request for a maximum capacity.

  • Panel configuration: molded or pultruded, thickness, mesh or bar profile, resin, surface and any cover. Mark undecided items.
  • Support arrangement: clear span or support centers clearly labeled, bearing widths, supported edges, panel joints and continuity.
  • Loads: type, value, units, contact area and position; include equipment feet, wheel routes, stored materials and movement.
  • Acceptance requirements: deflection limit, applicable project specification and required test or calculation documents.
  • Changes and exposure: openings, trimmed edges, sustained loading, normal and peak temperature, chemicals and cleaning.
  • Supply details: finished-piece dimensions, quantity and available drawings or BOQ.

We use this information to review the candidate configuration, identify the relevant data and make any remaining document or testing needs clear. If the project requires a specific report or calculation, include that requirement with the enquiry so its scope can be confirmed.

Technical Sources Used in This Guide

The numeric reference rows and their stated conditions come from Webforge; the factory test record is identified separately above. Fibergrate’s technical load-table directory is a reference for separating product families and loading categories, not a source of ratings for our products. Each manufacturer’s data remains specific to its stated products and conditions.

FRP Grating Load Capacity and Span Questions

How much weight can 25, 30 or 38 mm FRP grating carry?

Thickness alone does not establish a load rating. Match the bar dimensions, spacing, reinforcement and resin system to the span, supported edges, load distribution and deflection limit. The two 38 mm reference structures on this page do not provide ratings for every 38 mm panel or for 25 and 30 mm grating.

What is the maximum unsupported span for FRP grating?

There is no single maximum for the whole range. The adopted reference spans of 990 mm and 1035 mm relate to two specific structures at 4 kPa with a 5 mm deflection target. They are not breaking spans or permission to use any panel at those distances. Confirm the source's span definition and the project's support and load conditions.

Can a uniform load table be used for a trolley or equipment feet?

A uniform load rating does not establish a wheel or foot loading rating. Provide the individual contact loads, contact areas, positions and any movement or impact conditions. Dividing equipment weight by the whole floor area hides the local loads that the panel actually receives.

Can I use the same table for molded, pultruded, mini mesh and covered grating?

Only where the supporting document explicitly covers the configuration and conditions. Pultruded grating needs the bearing-bar direction checked. Mini mesh and covered panels need their own structural identification; a smaller opening or added cover does not automatically increase the permitted load.

Is a panel suitable if its deflection is below the limit?

Deflection is one check. The applicable strength or recommended-load limit, support and bearing conditions, local loading, environment and duration must also be satisfied. A low measured deflection by itself is not a complete load rating, and an ultimate failure load is not an allowable service load.

Do cutouts, edge sealing or clips change the load check?

Cutouts and trimmed edges can change load paths and bearing, so identify them on the drawing. Sealing a cut protects the exposed material but does not reconnect interrupted bars. Fixing clips should not be treated as added structural supports unless that function is specifically designed and verified.

Do you have a factory test report for grating load capacity?

We have report HZTC/BG-24051102 issued on 17 May 2024 for Jianxing, our own factory. It records a 4 kN/m² equivalent uniform design load and a 600 mm test span. The report does not identify a complete panel model, thickness, mesh and resin specification, so it is a test record rather than a load table for every product we supply.

Can these reference values approve permanent loads or hot service?

These values alone do not establish performance under sustained load or elevated temperature. Send the load duration, normal and peak temperature, chemical exposure and actual configuration. Applicable long-term and service-condition evidence needs to be checked without assuming a universal reduction factor.
